What's Happening in Medellín, Week of August 24, 2026

Both Medellín clubs play at home this week, bookending a run of days that also brings a rare, deep lunar eclipse and the final stretch of the city's biggest theatre festival. Here's what to put on the calendar for the week of August 24.

Atlético Nacional hosts Deportivo Cali this Wednesday, August 26, kicking off at 8:30 p.m. at Estadio Atanasio Girardot, fecha 7 of Liga BetPlay II. Nacional sits tenth in the table with six points after three matches, coming off a 2-1 comeback win at Fortaleza, and has little rest before a Saturday trip to face Alianza. (El Colombiano)

The night of Thursday, August 27 into Friday, August 28, watch the sky: a deep partial lunar eclipse will cover 96% of the Moon, one of the deepest visible anywhere until 2028, according to NASA. From Medellín the partial phase starts at 10:34 p.m. Thursday, peaks at 12:12 a.m. Friday when the shadowed 96% turns a reddish "blood moon" color, and wraps up by 3:03 a.m. No telescope or eye protection needed, just a clear patch of sky; the earlier and later hours near total darkness in Laureles or El Poblado's quieter streets will show it better than downtown's glow. The 22nd Fiesta de las Artes Escénicas runs through Saturday, August 29, putting more than 1,000 artists into roughly 150 performances across 23 theatres citywide, most of them small independent houses in Laureles and the centro. There's no single consolidated schedule, listings live at medellin.gov.co and at medellinenescena.com.co, so pick a venue near you rather than trying to read the whole festival. It's built for local regulars, not tourists, which means no English programming but also real, inexpensive tickets and none of the scramble of a marketed festival. Dance and circus travel across the language barrier easiest if your Spanish is thin. (The Rio Times)

Independiente Medellín, currently fourth with nine points from three wins and a loss, closes out the week hosting Llaneros this Sunday, August 30, at 4:10 p.m., also at the Atanasio Girardot. El Poderoso is looking to bounce back in front of its own fans after a contested 0-1 loss to Cúcuta the previous Saturday. (El Colombiano)

That's the week ahead: two home matches for the city's clubs, a red moon in between, and the last days of the loudest theatre week of the year.

Medellín. Understood.
