Hematologists in Medellín (2026): Blood Disorders, Anemia, and Clotting Care
Updated August 202612 min readBy Mike Chartrand
Where expats in Medellín find and vet a real hematologist: hospital hematology programs, CBC-based workups, bone marrow biopsy, anemia and clotting-disorder evaluation, anticoagulation management, RETHUS verification, and COP-vs-USD pricing.

Quick answer: A hematology consultation runs COP 180,000 to 350,000 (USD 45 to 88), a complete blood count with differential COP 40,000 to 90,000 (USD 10 to 23), and a bone marrow biopsy COP 900,000 to 1,800,000 (USD 225 to 450), all 70 to 90% less than US pricing. Hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe is the go-to for anything involving bone marrow transplant, malignant hematology, or complex clotting disorders; Clínica Las Américas Auna and Hospital San Vicente Fundación cover general hematology and routine anemia workups well. The single fact that matters most before you book: confirm the physician is registered in RETHUS with hematología as the actual specialty, not medicina interna alone.
Why you need a real hematologist, not just a repeat CBC
Persistent fatigue, unexplained bruising, abnormal bleeding or clotting, or a CBC that keeps coming back with an odd flag deserve a real hematology workup, not a repeated blood draw with no interpretation behind it. Anemia alone has dozens of possible causes, iron deficiency, B12 deficiency, chronic disease, and genetic conditions all look similar on a basic panel but need very different treatment. If you're on anticoagulation (blood thinners) or have a family history of clotting disorders, ongoing hematology management matters even more once you're living somewhere new.
What this guide is not: a diagnosis tool or a ranking of "the best hematologist in Medellín." Hematology ranges from routine anemia management to malignant blood disorders requiring a completely different level of care, no honest source can tell you who's "best" without knowing your chart. What we do here: name the hospital programs that consistently surface in patient research, give you real COP and USD pricing for common hematology services, and show you exactly how to verify credentials before you book.
The 30-second version
Where the serious hematology is: Hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe (bone marrow transplant, malignant hematology, complex clotting disorders); Clínica Las Américas Auna and Hospital San Vicente Fundación for general hematology and routine anemia or clotting workups.
Vs. US: 70 to 90% savings on consultations, bloodwork, and standard diagnostic procedures.
The single best filter: confirm the physician is a board-certified hematologist registered in RETHUS, and that the facility is habilitada in REPS for hematology and laboratory services.
If you're on anticoagulation: establish care with one hematologist quickly, blood-thinner dosing needs consistent monitoring, not a different doctor every visit.
Programs and hospitals to know
These are hospital hematology programs that surface repeatedly in patient research, REPS records, and Google reviews in Medellín. None of this is an endorsement. Verify the treating physician's RETHUS registration and specialty before committing. We can do that verification with you.
How to verify a specialist in Colombia:
Look up their name and cédula at rethus.minsalud.gov.co to confirm medical registration and specialty.
Confirm the specialty reads "especialista en hematología" from a university program recognized by the Ministry of Education, not just "medicina interna" with a hematology interest.
Check the facility's habilitación status at prestadores.minsalud.gov.co (REPS) to confirm it's authorized for hematology and laboratory services.
For malignant hematology or bone marrow transplant, confirm the facility has an accredited transplant program and oncology backup, not every clinic offering hematology consultations has this.
Hospital hematology programs
Hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe, JCI-accredited; bone marrow, liver, kidney, and heart transplant program with a full malignant-hematology and complex-clotting-disorder service, the deepest specialist bench in the city for anything beyond routine.
Clínica Las Américas Auna, JCI-accredited; general hematology consultations and diagnostics as part of its broader oncology and internal-medicine network.
Hospital San Vicente Fundación, one of the largest general hospitals in the city; hematology service covers routine anemia and clotting workups with strong laboratory and internal-medicine backup.
The pattern worth understanding: Pablo Tobón Uribe is where you want to be for anything malignant, transplant-related, or a complex clotting disorder, it has the transplant program and oncology backup other facilities don't. Las Américas Auna and San Vicente Fundación work well for routine anemia workups, clotting-panel evaluation, and ongoing anticoagulation management.
What you should actually pay (USD, 2026)
These are consumer, cash-pay prices at established Medellín clinics, not EPS (public insurance) rates, which are lower but come with longer waits and are generally not accessible to short-term visitors or most retirees on a foreign passport without a Colombian EPS enrollment. A note on the malignant-hematology end of the spectrum: if a workup finds leukemia, lymphoma, or a condition requiring chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant, that's a much bigger conversation with different economics, treatment programs run into the tens of thousands of dollars even at Colombian pricing, still typically 50 to 80% below equivalent US treatment. That's well outside the scope of routine consultations covered here, if something is flagged, Pablo Tobón Uribe's hematology-oncology team walks you through next steps and pricing directly, and we can help you get a second opinion before committing.
How to vet a specialist in Colombia
1. Confirm they're actually a hematologist, not adjacent. Internal medicine physicians can order and interpret a basic CBC, but genuine hematology sub-specialty work (bone marrow interpretation, clotting-disorder management, anything malignant) should come from someone whose RETHUS registration says hematología.
2. If you're on anticoagulation, ask about their monitoring protocol before you switch providers. Blood-thinner dosing (warfarin especially) needs regular INR checks, confirm how often, and whether results are available quickly enough to adjust your dose without a dangerous gap.
3. Ask how results get delivered and in what language. If you want your home-country doctor kept in the loop, ask upfront whether you'll get a written report and lab values in standard international units, not just a verbal readout.
4. For any biopsy or malignant workup, ask which lab processes the pathology. Confirm the pathology lab is accredited and ask about typical turnaround time, this affects how quickly you'll have an actual answer.
5. Confirm cash-pay vs. insurance handling upfront. Most private clinics quote cash-pay pricing directly to international patients and issue an official electronic invoice (factura electrónica) for insurance reimbursement. Ask before the appointment.
Red flags
A hematology diagnosis with no bloodwork behind it. Confirm actual lab values were reviewed, not just a symptom checklist.
Below-market pricing with no itemization. If a workup package is priced far under the ranges above with no written breakdown, something is being cut.
No written report or lab values offered. If you can't leave with documentation, your home-country doctor can't use any of it.
Anticoagulation dosing changed without a follow-up INR check scheduled. Any dose adjustment needs a monitoring plan, not a one-off change with no follow-up.
Cash-only payment with no electronic invoice. Legitimate clinics issue an official factura electrónica.
A facility with no visible REPS habilitación for hematology or laboratory services. Especially relevant for smaller storefront clinics.
Ongoing care for expat retirees
Anemia management, clotting-disorder monitoring, and anticoagulation dosing are all ongoing relationships, not one-time consultations. If you're living in Medellín full time, picking one hematologist you'll see again matters, especially if you're on a blood thinner that needs regular level checks.
Insurance vs. cash-pay. If you're enrolled in a Colombian EPS (public insurance) or a private prepagada plan, hematology consultations and routine labs are typically covered, though wait times for non-urgent EPS appointments can run weeks. Most expat retirees either enroll in EPS as required by law and separately pay cash for anything they want faster, or carry an international private health plan.
Getting your baseline history to a Medellín hematologist. Bring your most recent CBC, iron studies, and (if applicable) anticoagulation dosing history to your first visit, this saves weeks of redundant testing and gives the physician real data to work from immediately.
Prescription continuity. Anticoagulants and other hematology medications are widely available in Colombian pharmacies, often cheaper than in the US, but dosing should always be adjusted by a physician actively monitoring your levels, not self-adjusted based on a foreign prescription alone.
How we help (and what it costs)
We're a local concierge service for English-speaking patients and retirees in Medellín. Two ways to work with us:
We make the introduction. This is something the whole Medellín Guide team does routinely, not a special add-on. Message Catalina on WhatsApp any time, or talk directly with Mike or Santi, and we introduce you to a vetted clinic, collect and share whatever documents or history they need, relay questions and answers back and forth between you and the clinic, and help set up the actual call or consultation. Free to you. Vendor-funded when a referral converts.
Beyond the introduction, we can also handle in-person Spanish translation at consults, airport pickup and ground transport, appointment coordination, and help arranging where you’ll stay and recover, priced per request, no contract, pay as you go.
Do I need a referral to see a hematologist in Medellín? For cash-pay private practice, no, you can book directly with most hematologists or hospital programs. Through Colombian EPS insurance, yes, you typically need a referral from a general practitioner first.
Can I get my results in English? Some hospital-based programs that market to international patients offer English-language summaries or English-speaking staff. Ask before booking, and we can also help translate a Spanish report if needed.
Is a Colombian hematologist's opinion as reliable as a US one? At the hospitals named in this guide, yes. Pablo Tobón Uribe and Clínica Las Américas Auna are both JCI-accredited (the same international standard US hospitals use). The variable isn't the country, it's whether you're at a real hospital-affiliated program versus an unaccredited storefront.
What if a test finds something concerning? The hematologist who reviews your results should explain next steps directly, whether that's a repeat test, a referral to a malignant-hematology specialist, or medication changes. For anything serious, get a second opinion before committing to treatment.
Will my travel insurance reimburse this? Many will, if the clinic issues a proper itemized electronic invoice (factura electrónica). Confirm what documentation your specific plan requires before you book.
